Icelandic Sheep

Icelandic sheep developed from the short-tailed landrace sheep that were brought to Iceland by the Vikings!

They developed into a Triple Purpose breed providing the settlers of the island meat, milk and wool, becoming hardy enough to survive Iceland’s harsh winters and thrifty enough to thrive over the short artic summer.

There are no natural large predators to Icelandic sheep on their mountain ranges in Iceland leading the breed to become a non-flocking breed.

Icelandic sheep uniquely have a sub-sect with the breed known as Leader Sheep. These sheep can be distinguished by their personalities and their build, being slightly leaner, taller and keener than the rest. Over the centuries there have been many stories of Leader Sheep saving the day so count yourself lucky if you ever get the chance to own one!
